Spring 2007 ~ Friends of the Ellwood Coast (FOTEC), Goleta, California

Development Approved on Land Neighboring the Sperling Preserve (Ellwood Mesa)

The proposal by the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), to build 373 new units for faculty and student families on University land north of Devereux Slough was approved in November 2006. Construction on the projects will begin in 2007 once the university approves a third-party developer.

Mangement of the Sperling Preserve

Management falls under the Ellwood-Devereux Open Space Habitat Management Plan (OSHMP), which includes land surrounding the Devereux Slough contiguous with Coal Oil Point, the Preserve, and Santa Barbara Shores Park. UCSB's newly approved housing makes it more important than ever for FOTEC to help ensure protection for the land adjacent to this property. As of March 2007, the OSHMP was still to be finalized. http://facilities.ucsb.edu/planning/ellwood-devereux
