Friends of the Ellwood Coast (FOTEC) is a non-profit corporation organized and operated exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Ellwood Coast is defined as all undeveloped land within the coastal zone between Coal Oil Point on the East and Sandpiper Golf Course on the West. Please see the Maps section for further clarification of the area of interest.
Our Objective
The primary objective of FOTEC is the permanent preservation of the Ellwood Coast for its unique wildlife habitat, and its scenic, recreational, and cultural resources.
Project Background
FOTEC was formed in December of 1999, formalizing the efforts of many neighbors and other admirers and users of the Ellwood Coast who have worked hard over the years to prevent development on this lovely site. FOTEC's directors come from many different walks of life, from engineering and accounting, to medicine and planning. Most live close to Ellwood, but several are Santa Barbara city residents, reflecting Ellwood's wide appeal.
FOTEC activities include the gathering of information about the property and associated development plans. It distributes this information through this website, via mailings, and from booths at local events. FOTEC is represented at public hearings affecting the Ellwood Coast. It responds to the developers' proposals and seeks to ensure the Coastal Act is upheld and Ellwood left intact. The group keeps in touch with other like-minded local organizations and its directors meet with the developers' representatives, county planners, and representatives of non-profit groups that help acquire land for public use. In line with its objectives, FOTEC's endeavors are dedicated to the acquisition of the Ellwood Coast for the public.
